What's customary on a yahrzeit
- The candle: a 24-hour memorial candle is lit at nightfall as the yahrzeit begins (before sunset if it falls on Shabbat or a festival).
- Kaddish: mourners say Kaddish at the services of that day; many arrange to lead services or receive an aliyah on the Shabbat before.
- Learning and tzedakah: studying Mishnah or Torah and giving charity in the person's memory are widespread customs.
- Visiting the grave on or near the day, where possible.
- Fasting on the day is an older custom still kept by some.

Questions
What is a yahrzeit?
The anniversary of a death on the Hebrew calendar. It's observed each year on the same Hebrew date, which falls on a different English date every year.
Why does 'after sunset' matter?
The Hebrew day begins at nightfall. If the passing was after sunset, it belongs to the next Hebrew date.
What if the passing was in Adar?
In a Jewish leap year there are two months of Adar. Customs differ on which to observe; the calculator follows Hebcal's rule and flags it so you can check with your rabbi.
When does the yahrzeit begin?
At nightfall on the evening before the English date shown. The memorial candle is lit then, before or at sunset.
Who did the date math?
Hebcal, the open Jewish calendar service used by synagogues and apps worldwide. This site adds the ten-year table, the calendar file and the explanations.
